Forgetting to Remember
Are you currently in a ‘Summer Season’? Where life feels like a rollercoaster that only goes up, things seem to fall into place and every day is met with joyful anticipation? If so make sure you’re not forgetting to remember a key thing!
Forgetting to Remember
“Praise the Lord, I tell myself and never forget the good things He does for me.” – Psalm 103:2
In February I went on my first solo trip to the States. Two weeks in, I was having an amazing time, but during a phone call to my Mum, she asked if I was ‘okay’ and whether I wanted to come home early. Confused, I suddenly realized I’d fallen into a habit of calling her whenever I had a problem and needed advice or support. Whether it was missing a bus, getting lost or feeling anxious, I would turn to her, totally forgetting to share all the positive experiences I was having as well.
It’s funny how often we can treat God the same way.
There no doubt, it’s easier to prioritize Him when life is tough. Easier to pray daily when you have a long prayer list, to attend church events when your social life is quiet and to lean on Him when you have no one else to turn to. Make no mistake, just like a Mum, God loves to comfort us during these ‘winter’ seasons. He loves it when our faith remains steadfast during times of trial and when we find refuge in his word and spirit.
“Blessed be God who comforts us in all our affliction” – 2 Corinthians 1:4
However, we all know how quickly you forget how cold winter is, when you’re standing in the summer sun.
In the same way, when we battle through a hard time, and life starts to feel good again, we can quickly take it for granted and forget to show gratitude to the one who delivered us from Winter into the Summer. We can become self-sufficient and unthankful, which Psalm 107 warns , “tests God’s patience, frustrates the Holy One and makes God’s anger rise”. Sounds harsh, but I don’t think I’d like my support and grace going unappreciated either…
If you struggle with ‘forgetting’ God during the good times, you’re certainly not alone. A great example in the bible being when the Israelites approached the Promised Land. Suddenly surrounded with an abundance of food, water, shelter and land, Moses knew that he had to warn them about the danger of forgetting to give thanks to God. Remembering that he was the reason they were free and blessed with the land.
“Be careful that you do not forget the LORD who brought you out of Egypt” – Deuteronomy 6:12
See, it’s important to make God the center of our lives, even when things are going well, not just to give thanks but because our God loves celebrating our summer seasons and successes! Just like a parent, He is fiercely proud of us and loves to dance with us during our times of joy. Smile proudly down on us when we achieve that goal or even just have a great day. God wants to be a part of our lives not just during the tough times but the wonderful ones as well.
So how do we do this? How do we work towards never forgetting God’s goodness in our lives?
“I think it is right to refresh your memory as long as you are human” – 2 Peter 1:13
Just as it says in 2 Peter 1:13, we have to refresh our memories, by keeping a record of how God has worked through our lives.
Feeling like you’re going through a bit of a winter? Then reflect on how you want God to work through your life and comfort you instead. In a summer season? Take some time this week to write down what God has done for you and sit in gratitude for how GOOD our Father is!
