Luke 13 / (42 min)

Then Jesus asked, “What is the kingdom of God like? What shall I compare it to? 19 It is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his garden. It grew and became a tree, and the birds perched in its branches.”

Have you ever thought about the nature of a seed before? Have you ever considered that big massive trees and forests have all come up from the ground- starting as a mere little seed? I think it is pretty crazy when you think about it, and I guess Jesus did too.

The parable of the mustard seed truly is a beautiful analogy for the Kingdom of God. Alex digs deep into this idea during his incredible podcast, but here is a short overview:

What God is saying about the Kingdom through a mustard seed:

  1. It’s small: Humble in nature, the kingdom does not scream at you like the other things of this world. We need to search for it and seek it out. We need to be intentionally tuned into the kingdom in order to see it working.
  2. It has potential: No one knows the extent of God’s kingdom. It maybe small but it can grow and grow and become a place that provides shelter and rest for others. It can be a place where people come to be restored and rejuvenated. It can grow into these things and more if it is carefully watered, nurtured, and taken care of.
  3. It’s personal: There is a certain garden for a certain seed. The Lord has made his kingdom unique and that kingdom’s unique tasks special for each person. It is then up to the gardener of that seed to steward it and grow it into all the Lord has planned for it

For these things to happen the gardener needs to believe in their ability and calling. They need to see themselves in the light of Christ, and then need to stay rooted and attached to Him. If we doubt ourselves, we will never discover the potential the Lord has placed inside of us.
